Adult Rowing

Our adult programs are designed for the recreational or competitive rower who is 18+. We have a variety of different offerings, including learn to rows, logbook rowing, a regatta focused coached program, and programs specifically for collegiate athletes.

Full Vaccination Against Covid-19 is strongly encouraged for all participants.

With the exception of Adult Learn to Row and Collegiate Programs, all athletes must be Masters Annual Memebers to participate in adult programming.

Masters Teams

Masters Rowing is for adults 18+ who have prior experience rowing and who are excited to continue training with like minded athletes. Both the Masters Competitive and Masters Recreational Teams are coached programs, with athletes primarily training in team boats, both sculling and sweep. The ability and willingness to train in the single is highly valued on both teams as well, especially on mornings when numbers aren’t quite right for team boats. If you are interested in coxing for either team, we would love to have you!

We divide our training year into different sessions, based on the season. Come for one, come for all – we offer Competitive sessions through the Summer, Fall and Spring, and Recreational sessions in the Spring and Summer.

Check out details on both teams below, and find the best fit for you! Anyone joining a masters team must also have a GBR Annual Membership.

Masters Competitive Team

Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Cost: Yearly Masters Membership + $225 per season

Spring Season: April 24th to June 7th – 5:15am to 7:00am – MWF
Summer Season: June 24th to August 9th – 5:15am to 7:00am – MWF

Athletes will be boated according to skill level, fitness and technical ability. Athletes who have been working through the GBR learn to row system should have successfully completed Adult LTR 1 & 2, and spent at least one season on the Masters Recreational Team before considering a move to the Competitive Team. Please talk to your coach prior to registering. For athletes coming to us with prior rowing experience at other programs, please contact the rowing director to discuss which Masters team is best for you.

Adult Learn to Row

Have you always wanted to try rowing? Are you looking for a new activity to stay fit? Do you enjoy being in nature and working with a group of like-minded people? If you said yes, welcome to Great Bay Rowing!

Our Adult Learn to Row programs are divided into two levels, to help athletes progress at their own pace with others at the same skill level.

Adult Learn to Row 1 is designed for adults with no experience in the sport, or for those who may have dabbled a time or two and are looking to get back into the swing of things. You will learn the basic stroke on the erg (indoor rowing machine) and take your skills to the water in stable sculling (two oars per person) and sweep (one oar per person) boats, depending on enrollment numbers. Athletes will master basic technical skills and develop comfort and independence in a variety of boat types.

Adult Learn to Row 2 will build on the skills of LTR 1, while increasing athletes’ confidence and mastery on the water. You must complete LTR 1 before moving onto LTR 2, and subsequently complete LTR 2 before joining any of the masters recreational or competitive teams.

All programs will be coached by our experienced, knowledgeable staff who put emphasis on the development of the individual athlete.

Winter Training Season

Registration will open on November 6th for 2024 programming!

Winter Training is open to High School Varsity Athletes and High School Novice Athletes who were on the novice team in the Fall of 2023. We welcome athletes both from Great Bay Rowing and from other teams that may not run their own winter programs. If you are a brand new athlete who is interested in learning how to row this winter, please contact the Rowing Director.

Registration is divided into Members and Non-Members. Athletes qualify for Member pricing if they participated in a Fall 2023 program. Any athlete that DID NOT participate in a Fall 2023 program should register as a Non-Member. This is for registration purposes only – all athletes train together.

Masters Winter Training

Winter Training Session – January 8th to February 23rd

This season, we will be offering two training level options for our High School Athletes – either five days a week or three days a week. Athletes should choose the option that best suits their schedules, training goals, and interest.

Five Day a Week Winter Training
Practices Monday thru Friday
5:00pm to 7:00pm

Three Day a Week Winter Training
Athletes will select their 3 training days for the season ahead of time and communicate this to the rowing director via email. Athletes may not exceed 3 training days each week.
5:00pm to 7:00pm

Fall Rowing Season

The Spring season will run from Monday, April 1st to Sunday, May 26th. Athletes who are in 8th – 12th grade are welcome to join either the High School Varsity Team or the High School Novice Team.

No experience with rowing is necessary to join the Novice Team.
Any athlete with prior experience at a different rowing program who is interested in joining GBR should contact the Rowing Director and provide a letter of reference from their previous coach, so we may best integrate you into the team.

The Varsity and Novice teams will practice during the same time slot (Monday – Friday, 5:00pm to 7:00pm), and will be boated within their respective squads. Practices are held in Dover. Athletes on both the Varsity and Novice teams will race on weekends throughout April and May. The race schedule is at the bottom of this page and will be updated as the start of the season gets closer.

Season tuition covers racing entry fees, coaching and equipment costs, club membership and facilities upkeep. Fees for uniforms, gear and race travel will be assessed separately throughout the season.

We will be seeking volunteers for various tasks throughout the spring season, including assisting with the food tent at regattas, organizing the end of season celebration, coordinating the team sponsor shirts, assisting with equipment maintenance and transport, and fulfilling our USRowing Volunteer Requirement at applicable events.

Good faith participation is required from all athletes in our seasonal fundraisers. For families who choose not to participate in seasonal fundraising, a buy out option will be provided instead. All fundraising information will be detailed at the start of season meeting. For the Spring of 2024, please save the date for our two community fundraisers on April 13th at Barnes & Noble, and May 7th at Chipotle!

Military/Veterans

Great Bay Rowing is committed to the well being and inclusion of our local veterans and active duty service members, particularly those living with PTSD and other disabilities from their military service. Through the Freedom Rows program, injured veterans or injured active duty service members can become members of USRowing at no cost, and have access to equipment that allows for adaptive access to the water. Great Bay Rowing offers injured veterans a place to become part of a larger community of veterans on the water across the country.

For more information about Freedom Rows opportunities, please contact Felicia Sperry.

Adaptive Rowing

At Great Bay Rowing, we believe that rowing is a sport for everyone, regardless of physical ability. Our adaptive rowing program aims to help people with a range of physical disabilities get on the water, through the use of specialized equipment and with the help of our dedicated coaches.

If you live in the Seacoast Area, and want to give adaptive rowing a try, please contact us and we will work with you to make it happen!
